Honoring Edith Morgan for her dedication and work in the community.


WHEREAS, Edith Morgan is the mother of the late National Football League Kansas City Chiefs, linebacker Derrick Thomas, and founder of Mom 2 Mom 58 (a faith-based organization of mothers of professional athletes devoted to helping their sons to stay grounded and use their position to make the world a better place). In addition, Ms. Morgan has established a foundation to promote seat belt safety and car seat safety for infants; and


WHEREAS, taking her grief and loss, Ms. Morgan has launched a nationwide campaign to build awareness of the need to buckle up to help reduce motor vehicle injuries to children and adults, with emphasis on the low income and minority communities; and


WHEREAS, recently, at the Super Bowl in Tampa, Florida, Ms. Morgan through Mom 2 Mom 58 gave out 158 car seats to mothers in a low-income area and trained the young moms on how to install the car seats; and


WHEREAS, Ms. Morgan has formed alliances with the Players Association of the N.F.L., Costco, Kansas City Chiefs, Department of Transportation and the International Center for Injury Prevention; and


WHEREAS, it has taken courage to move forward and to use all her resources to make a critical difference. Statistics show that the lack of access to affordable child safety seats contributes to a lower usage rate among low income families, Black, Hispanic, and Native American children have disproportionate death and injury rates due to higher levels of poverty, unemployment and low education; and


WHEREAS, Ms. Morgan makes her home in Kansas City, Missouri, and intends to impact all the NFL cities and communities in need of this program. Her courage and commitment to save lives and teach the less fortunate makes her an outstanding individual and a strong African-American woman that fights for a better future and out of her tragedy, continues to stand tall; NOW, THEREFORE,




That the Mayor and Council hereby honor Edith Morgan for her dedication and work to make the community better; and


BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Edith Morgan with the appreciation of the Mayor, Council and citizens of Kansas City for her devotion to making the community a safer place for all citizens.
