RESOLUTION NO. 180318

Recognizing the need to increase public awareness to the importance and benefits of mentoring youth in the community.

WHEREAS, Men of Vision and Empowerment MOVE was established on April 24, 2013, and Ladies of Vision & Empowerment LOVE was established on April 24, 2014, with the mission of moving young boys and girls towards maturity and security in education and economics as they practice etiquette in employment and entrepreneurship to empower community unity; and

WHEREAS, MOVE and LOVE give youth an opportunity to do their part to strengthen our nation by providing youth with longterm quality mentoring that is proven to help them reach their full potential; and

WHEREAS, mentors build character, encourage success, boost confidence, lift expectations, and inspire young people to do their best, serving as friends, role models, teachers, and sources of stability and support during a critical time in a child’s life; and

WHEREAS, research has shown that youth engaged in onetoone, professionally supported mentoring programs, like MOVE and LOVE are more likely to make positive choices in their lives and stay on track for their future; and

WHEREAS, mentoring strengthens the economic and social well-being of our communities by helping young people fulfill their potential while helping maintain healthy families and promoting more vibrant communities; and

WHEREAS, we as community leaders recognize the value that mentors have in building a strong and sustainable community and young people need a solid foundation of support that will help them become well-educated, confident, and productive citizens; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby recognize the need to increase public awareness to the importance and benefits of mentoring youth; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to DeJuana M.
