RESOLUTION NO. 140411

 

Honoring the 37th anniversary of Donna F. Stewart, Editor of The Kansas City CALL newspaper.

 

WHEREAS, Donna F. Stewart, a Central High school graduate, began working as a news reporter for The Kansas City CALL newspaper on May 22, 1977, after she graduated from Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri; and

 

WHEREAS, The CALL is the newspaper of record for Kansas City's black community since 1919 and was founded by Chester A. Franklin; and

 

WHEREAS, the newspaper's history includes the recording of lynchings, housing, crime, first blacks in sports such as Negro Leagues baseball and Jackie Robinson as the first Negro in Major Leagues baseball, education, politics, economic development, social events, racial relations and religion have been the focus of The CALL for 94 continuous years; and

 

WHEREAS, historic events during the tenure of Ms. Stewart at The CALL includes the election of Reverend Emanuel Cleaver II as the City's first black Mayor and the election of President Barack H. Obama with The CALL selling a record 35,000 newspapers after the election; and

 

WHEREAS, The CALL is the recorder of people's lives including how people live and work, as well as business news, church news and community events; and

 

WHEREAS, Ms. Stewart has served as a reporter, managing editor and publisher of The CALL and was mentored by Ms. Lucile Bluford until her health began to fail and assumed the role as interim publisher in 1999; and

 

WHEREAS, Ms. Stewart succeeded Ms. Bluford as publisher and owner of The CALL since June, 2003 with other publishers including Mr. Franklin, Mrs. Ada Franklin and Ms. Bluford; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby honor the 37th anniversary of Donna F. Stewart, Editor of The Kansas City CALL newspaper; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy here of be presented to Donna F. Stewart with the best wishes of the Mayor and Council for many more successful years in her chosen career.
