RESOLUTION NO. 100072

Declaring February 2010 as African American History Month in Kansas City, Missouri.

WHEREAS, the month of February is designated as “African American History Month” throughout the United States. It serves a time to honor the history, lives, and contributions of African Americans, and to raise awareness and knowledge of the significance of the African American experience; and

WHEREAS, this year, the theme of the African American History Month is “The History of Black Economic Empowerment.” After gaining their freedom from slavery, African Americans faced a continuing struggle to empower their economic development and vitality. Even though the chains of slavery were gone, racism and discrimination continued to have a hold on the economic progress of African American communities in the United States; and

WHEREAS, rising against all odds, African American men and women became land and business owners, professionals, skilled workers and innovators. During a time when Jim Crow Laws (1876 to 1965) mandated segregation in public facilities under the “separate but equal” status, African Americans established their own banks, hospitals, colleges and insurance companies; and

WHEREAS, moving forward in 2010, we are being inspired by the history of the African American struggle for economic empowerment as the current economy of our country, United States of America, moves out of a recession to recovery and growth; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare February, 2010 as African American History Month in Kansas City, Missouri; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof is presented to the African American History Committee with the Mayor and Council encouraging all citizens of Kansas City, Missouri honor the history of African Americans in our country.
