RESOLUTION NO. 051503

 

Recognizing Zonta International and its campaign for 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence

 

WHEREAS, Zonta International is an international service organization composed of executives in business and numerous professions and whose purpose is to advance the status of women. Zonta International has 33,000 members in 68 nations, and is recognized around the world for its purpose and integrity; and

 

WHEREAS, this year, Zontians worldwide have joined to emphasize the global campaign 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence, an effort initiated by the Womens Global Leadership Institute sponsored by the Center for Womens Global Leadership at Rutgers University. This campaign has been endorsed by 1700 organizations in 130 countries, and calls for the elimination of violence against women; and

 

WHEREAS, violence against women is a seemingly never-ending problem, and remains one of the most serious issues not addressed by governments and the people in positions to effect social change. The campaign in which Zonta International is participating bears the theme For the Health of Women, for the Health of the World: No More Violence and focuses on such issues as accessible education, combating the trafficking of women and girls in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and HIV/AIDS education in Nigeria. Zonta International also provides microcredit financing to empower women, and provides grants to UN agencies and NGOs for projects to challenge and change attitudes and behaviors that allow violence against women. Zonta International also provides funds and service to shelters in the City that seek to aid women who have been victims of violence; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby recognize Zonta International and its campaign for 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Harriett Yeckel and Janet Kannard, Zonta International, with the appreciation of the Mayor, Council and citizens of Kansas City for their efforts in curbing violence against women.
