WHEREAS, the National Medal for Museum and Library Service from the Institute of Museum and Library Services is the nation’s highest honor given to museums and libraries around the country for service to the community, and was presented by First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House to Mid-Continent Public Library and nine other recipients; and

WHEREAS, Mid-Continent Public Library serves a diverse mix of communities in the greater Kansas City metropolitan area spanning three counties and 1,349 square miles that requires varied service offerings and multiple service delivery methods; and

WHEREAS, Mid-Continent Public Library has three foundational types of service: literacy initiatives, collections and digital resources investments, and community engagement efforts; and

WHEREAS, its individual branches also excel in developing new initiatives to better serve the public such as the successful efforts by the Red Bridge Branch to sign up Google customers, resulting in that Branch being awarded a Google Fiber Partnership to provide high speed internet service to library patrons; NOW, THEREFORE,
