RESOLUTION NO. 090590

Recognizing the contributions of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people to life in Kansas City and condemning hateful, hurtful, and harmful speech that seeks not to understand and unify but to divide our society.

WHEREAS, forty years have passed since the defining moment at the Stonewall Inn in New York City on June 28, 1969 which for many marks the beginning of the modern gay rights movement there is still unimaginable prejudice against our neighbors in the LGBT community; and

WHEREAS, although it is recognized that for some people issues involving the LGBT community are formed from sincere beliefs; and

WHEREAS, when persons with sincerely held beliefs respectfully work with others society can be improved through efforts at reconciliation and understanding among all people; and

WHEREAS, there are, however, those who would use our differences as reasons for division, disunity and ultimately destruction of our society, and whose efforts are wrong and unproductive to the development of civil society; and

WHEREAS, like many groups of Kansas Citians, LGBT persons enrich the civic, economic, artistic, social and cultural life of the City through numerous and invaluable contributions which benefit the entire community; and

WHEREAS, the LGBT community constitutes an important, vital and integral element of Kansas City's rich mosaic of cultural diversity, of which it highly prides itself; and

WHEREAS, efforts to destroy rather than build the common bonds among all citizens of Kansas City serve no one, including even those endeavoring to divide us; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

Section 1. That the Mayor and Council recognize the contributions of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community in Kansas City and honor those contributions.

Section 2. That the Mayor and Council encourage all persons of good will to seek the development of a society of understanding and respect.

Section 3. That the Mayor and Council condemn the efforts of those who would speak from the deep well of prejudice in ways that harm our shared humanity.
