RESOLUTION NO. 970167
Declaring the month of February, 1997, as "Burns
Awareness Month" and commending the Shriners Hospitals for Children for
the care and contributions they provide for young burn victims.
WHEREAS, fire and burn injuries are leading causes
of accidental deaths in the United States, especially among children and the
elderly; and
WHEREAS, children under 10 account for as many as
half of all burns that require hospitalization and as many as 75 percent of all
scald burns; and
WHEREAS, about 75 percent of all burn accidents can
be prevented by a comprehensive national education and awareness campaign; and
WHEREAS, three Shriners Burns Institutes, provide
expert, specialized free medical care to children who have been burned; and
WHEREAS, the Shrine of North America and the
Shriners Burns Institutes join with other burn facilities across the nation in
recognizing the seriousness of fire hazard and the urgent need to educate the
public about burn prevention and fire safety; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
That the Mayor and Council hereby proclaim the month
of February, 1997 as "Burns Awareness Month"; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this
Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and
copies hereof be presented to Don Fowler, Potentate of Ararat Temple, Ed
Pavlovich, Hospital Chairman of Ararat Temple, George Wilkerson, Publicity
Chairman of the Hospital Committee of Ararat Temple and Dr. Robert McCauley,
Chief of Reconstructive Surgery at the Galveston Burns Institute.
