RESOLUTION NO. 990316

Increasing the list of the Citys state legislative priorities for 1999 by adding one new priority pertaining to a 1% increase in the hotel tax.

WHEREAS, the Convention and Visitors Bureau of Kansas City needs additional financial support for its increased efforts to sell Kansas City as a competitive convention city and desirable tourist destination; and

WHEREAS, the current hotel tax, which supports convention and entertainment facilities, the Neighborhood Tourism Development Fund, and the efforts of the Convention and Visitors Bureau, is a reasonable source from which such additional funds could be derived; and

WHEREAS, the Hotel and Motel Association of Greater Kansas City recently approved a resolution calling upon the Missouri General Assembly to authorize a 1% increase in the current hotel tax to provide the necessary additional financial support for those facilities, the Neighborhood Tourist Development Fund, and the supplemental marketing plan proposed by the Convention and Visitors Bureau; and

WHEREAS, the Mayor and Council of Kansas City wish to add their support for the authorization of such additional funding; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the City Council of Kansas City adds the following state legislative priority to its list for 1999:

HOTEL TAX

Support legislation authorizing a 1% increase in the hotel tax, of which 50% will be utilized to defray expenses for convention and entertainment facilities, 10% will bolster the Neighborhood Tourist Development Fund, and the remaining 40% will be utilized to support an increased Convention and Visitors Bureau marketing effort.
