RESOLUTION NO. 980276

 

Declaring March 28, 1998, Cesar E. Chavez Day in Kansas City, Missouri.

 

WHEREAS, Cesar Estrada Chavez dedicated his life to improving the lives of migrant workers by organizing the United Farm Workers and by drawing national attention to their working conditions through boycotts and strikes; and

 

WHEREAS, in doing that work, Cesar E. Chavez exemplified the virtues of kindness, selflessness, courage and determination no matter what the cost to himself; and

 

WHEREAS, despite the violence he and others endured on the picket lines, Cesar E. Chavez was quoted as saying, Love is the most important ingredient in nonviolent work...If were full of hatred, we cant really do our work; and

 

WHEREAS, the Hispanic community of Greater Kansas City wishes to preserve his memory and has already, under the leadership of Jerry Hernandez, renamed West 23rd Street Avenida Cesar E. Chavez from its western end at Kemper Arena east to West Pennway; and

 

WHEREAS, the Hispanic Media Association and Kansas City Hispanic News, under the leadership of Jose M. Arce, President of the Hispanic Media Association and Publisher of the Kansas City Hispanic News, now seek to complete the name change by including the 500 block of West 23rd under the designation Avenida Cesar E. Chavez; and

 

WHEREAS, the designation of Avenida Cesar E. Chavez is intended not only as a memorial but also as a reminder to greater Kansas Citians to continue his work by striving for peace, equal human rights for all and the opportunity for all people to reach their highest potential; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare March 28, 1998 as Cesar E. Chavez Day in Kansas City, Missouri, and that the 500 block of West 23rd be formally designated Avenida Cesar E. Chavez with a formal dedication ceremony scheduled on that same date; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Jose M. Arce, President of the Hispanic Media Association and Publisher of the Kansas City Hispanic News.
