RESOLUTION NO. 130113

 

Declaring February 21, 2013, as “Garret A. Morgan Day” in Kansas City, Missouri.

 

WHEREAS, the Conference of Minority Transportation Officials (COMTO) was founded in 1971, to provide a forum for senior level minority professionals in the transportation industry. The mission of COMTO is to ensure a level playing field and maximum participation in the transportation industry for minority individuals, businesses and communities of color through advocacy, information sharing, training, education and professional development; and

 

WHEREAS, the KC Area COMTO Chapter, one of thirty-nine chapters across the country, is lead with the bi-state leadership of MoDOT and KDOT, with the efforts being to ensure that its members serve in every sector of the transportation industry; and

 

WHEREAS, Garrett A. Morgan (1877-1963) was an African American businessman/inventor whose curiosity and innovation led to the creation of many useful products, the most notable being his patented design of the traffic signal in 1923; and

 

WHEREAS, the Garrett A. Morgan Shadow Day Program was developed under the Clinton administration to educate students in grades K through 12 about career opportunities in transportation, with the goal being to ensure that the nation is equipped with a workforce that can embrace the unlimited opportunities of the 21st century; and

 

WHEREAS, the KC Area COMTO Chapter recognizes the value of this program and has involved the following students from Missouri high schools: Aaron Hudgins, Senior at Lincoln Prep; Gabrielle Von Collins, Sophomore at Lee’s Summit North; and Jolena Willis, Senior at Paseo Academy; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare February 21, 2013, as “Garrett A. Morgan Day” in tribute to the contributions that he made to the betterment of our community, and countless communities across this nation and the globe; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to the participants of Garrett A. Morgan Shadow Day with the best wishes of the Mayor, Council and citizens of Kansas City.
