RESOLUTION NO. 180805

 

Declaring Friday, October 19, 2018, as “Buckle Up, Phone Down” day in Kansas City, Missouri, in conjunction with the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety and the City’s Corporate Safety & Risk Management Division.

 

WHEREAS, distracted driving is a leading cause of traffic crashes in Missouri and nationwide, that is on the increase; and

 

WHEREAS, 7 in 10 people use a cell phone while driving and 78% of teenagers admit to having read a text while driving; and

WHEREAS, the National Safety Council estimates crashes involving distracted drivers may be underreported by 50%; and

 

WHEREAS, the level of risk involved with using a hands free devices while driving is no less than using a handheld cell phone; and

 

WHEREAS, the risk of being involved in a vehicular accident is 4 times greater when a driver uses a cell phone and 23 times greater when a driver is texting while driving; and

 

WHEREAS, more than 15% of front seat drivers and occupants, and up to 80% of rear seat passengers fail to regularly buckle up; and

 

WHEREAS, of the 689 drivers and passengers killed in vehicular crashes in Missouri in 2016, 63% were unbuckled; NOW, THEREFORE

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare tomorrow, October 19, 2018, as “Buckle Up, Phone Down” day in Kansas City and urge all citizens to take MoDOT’s Buckle Up, Phone Down pledge and learn more about the risks associated with cell phone use and not buckling up while driving; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Eric Hallerud, Manager, Corporate Safety & Risk Management Division, and Shelie Daniel, MoDOT, in token of the appreciation of the Mayor and Council for many years of service to our city and of their best wishes for all the years to come.
