RESOLUTION NO. 130880

 

Declaring the month of November 2013 as American Diabetes Month in Kansas City, Missouri.

 

WHEREAS, Diabetes is a serious disease with potentially life-threatening complications such as heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney disease and amputation; and

 

WHEREAS, nearly 26 million people in the United States, including over 320,000 in the Kansas City metropolitan area have diabetes; and

 

WHEREAS, recent estimates project that as many as one in three American adults will have diabetes in 2050 if the current trends continue; and

 

WHEREAS, an increase in community awareness about prevention and treatment options is necessary to put a stop to the diabetes epidemic; and

 

WHEREAS, with proper management and treatment, people with diabetes live healthy productive lives; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare the month of November 2013 as American Diabetes Month in Kansas City, Missouri; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Linda Crider, Executive Director of the American Diabetes Association representing the Kansas City Area and the State of Kansas, Amy Johnson, American Diabetes Association National Youth Strategies Committee Volunteer, and David Johnson, National and Local Advocacy Committee Volunteer, with the appreciation of the Mayor and Council for the dedication and hard work being done to eliminate diabetes and prediabetes in the community.
