RESOLUTION NO. 100403

 

Declaring May 17-21, 2010, as Bike Week.

 

WHEREAS, the City of Kansas City, Missouri encourages the increased use of the bicycle, benefiting all citizens of Kansas City by improving air quality, reducing traffic congestion and noise, decreasing the use of and dependence upon finite energy sources, and fostering exercise; and

 

WHEREAS, the City of Kansas City, Missouri recognizes the bicycle as a legitimate roadway vehicle and therefore is entitled to legal and responsible use of all public roadway facilities in Missouri except where prohibited by law; and

 

WHEREAS, the City of Kansas City, Missouri recognizing the use of bicycles as a viable mode of transportation, endeavors to promote safe and responsible bicycling and is committed to incorporating the development of bicycle facilities in the vision for revitalizing downtown Kansas City and supporting livable neighborhoods; and

 

WHEREAS, the League of American Bicyclists and the Missouri Bicycle and Pedestrian Federation have established May as National Bicycle Month and Missouri Bicycle Month and the Mayor and City Council establishes May as Bicycle Safety Month in Kansas City; and

 

WHEREAS, the City’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee, the Missouri Bicycle and Pedestrian Federation, the Mayor and the City Council encourage all citizens to ride their bicycles to work, to the store, to the park, around their neighborhoods and with friends and family to promote the personal and societal benefits achieved from bicycling; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare May 17-21, 2010, as “Bike Week” in the City of Kansas City, Missouri, and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Eric Rogers, Chair of the City's Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee and Sarah Shipley, Bike Week Coordinator with the appreciation of the Mayor, Council and citizens of Kansas City for the efforts being made to make bicycling a safe mode of transportation in the community.
