Declaring December 3, 2000, as Willis Chapel AME Church Day in Kansas City.


WHEREAS, Willis Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church is a small congregation which was established in 1912 to make a positive impact in an historically unique community unique in that when African Americans were restricted to living above 27th Street, there was a small pocket of Black people who resided here and may of them and their descendants still do; and


WHEREAS, Willis Chapel AME Church currently occupies the building that for many years housed the school named for Phillis Wheatley, some estimate that the building itself is one hundred years old. The vast majority of African Americans in Kansas City, Missouri, over the age of fifty attended Wheatley School but in 1954 when the public schools were integrated, Wheatley School was abandoned; and


WHEREAS, in 1958, the Church under the pastorate of Rev. Chester Younge with the assistance of Dr. F. E. Fields, who also served as pastor during the 1970's, purchased the property and with the help of the members of the congregation remodeled the building and this old building has served the congregation well except with the growth of the Church, space is limited, it is not accessible to the differently abled, and it is not adequate for 21st Century ministry; and


WHEREAS, the Church has a new 10,400 square foot edifice under construction that has a new sanctuary, classrooms, offices, and space to house community programs. When construction is complete, the old building will be demolished; and


WHEREAS, a grand celebration was held on Sunday, December 3, 2000, called the Last Chance Services. There were three gatherings in order to afford as many people as possible the opportunity to visit the building, meet old friends and reminisce; NOW, THEREFORE,



That the Mayor and Council hereby declare December 3, 2000, as Willis Chapel AME Church Day in Kansas City; and


BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copies hereof be presented to the Willis Chapel AME Church congregation in token of the genuine respect and appreciation in which the Church is held and wishing them continued success.
