RESOLUTION - Supporting improved healthy food access in Kansas City, Missouri, and the Greater Kansas City Food Policy Coalition; and directing the City Manager to assign staff to work with this coalition to achieve our shared goals.

NEIGHBORHOODS & HEALTHY COMMUNITIES COMMITTEE recommends "IMMEDIATE ADOPTION"
The resolution before the Committee would express the support of the Kansas City Food Policy Coalition and its work toward improving access to healthy foods to all Kansas City residents. Dr. Rex Archer, Health Department, explained that others may give a presentation later and discuss the work of the coalition. Councilman Glover, asked who the members of the coalition were. Dr. Archer said that there were a wide range of members including Community Garden members and Truman Medical Center representatives. He will provide a list of members to the committee at a later date. He added that the coalition is working toward addressing the issue of food deserts in areas throughout Kansas City, Mo. He said that one of the big questions in addressing the issue is how to make use of vacant lots. He said that the details are numerous and the issue is important. Councilman Wagner addressed the work of the Coalition. He said that Councilwoman Circo is the original sponsor of the resolution but was not able to attend the meeting today but wanted to assure the committee that this is an important issue to her and to the city as a whole. The coalition is looking for different ways to address the "food desert". There is no easy fix but it is important to move forward. Councilman Reed said that there have been talks with CCO and Truman Medical Center as well. The ordinance was immediately adopted.
