NEIGHBORHOODS & HEALTHY COMMUNITIES COMMITTEE recommends "DO PASS"
Ron Griffin, MPH, Health Department, testified that the department received a grant for it's tuberculosis control program. The department investigated and treated 17 confirmed TB patients and over 600+ cases of TB infection in 2011. He said that each case has to be investigated to insure that others weren't infected by the reported patient. The grant helps fund the investigations as well as "directly observed therapy". Direct observed therapy is when nurses and public health workers witness and work directly with infected persons to insure that they take every dose of antibiotic. The therapy can take between 9-12 weeks. There were questions from the committee and comments from Councilman Glover regarding the importance of this program, stated that other cities have discounted the importance and reduced or eliminated funding for TB control and had to pay a heavy price in lost of life and millions of dollars. There was no public comments.
