RESOLUTION NO. 061041

 

Congratulating Navy Captain Matthew C. Gratton, M.D., upon receiving the Bronze Star Medal August 28th for his devotion to service as battalion surgeon while deployed in Iraq.

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Gratton was the surgeon for 3rd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team-2, 2nd Marine Division, during combat operations in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from January to September 2005 in Al Anbar Province, Iraq; and

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Gratton was responsible for the health of 1,700 Marines, sailors, and Iraqi soldiers base in two camps and three firm bases, organized medical visits, provided specialized medical care to more than 1,000 patients and coordinated personnel and material support for more than 500 Iraqi Army personnel; and

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Gratton provided trauma care to the battalion's 345 wounded in action, 150 of whom were serious enough for evacuation, during which time forty-six Marines and two corpsmen with the battalion made the ultimate sacrifice for democracy in Iraq: and

 

WHEREAS, on multiple occasions Dr. Gratton's skill as a physician saved life and limb, and on May 7th alone, he supervised, treated, and stabilized 11 casualties wounded in combat from a coordinated improvised explosive device attack in Haditha; and

 

WHEREAS, upon his return from active duty with the United States Navy, Dr. Gratton resumed his duties as the Medical Director of the Kansas City, Missouri Emergency Medical Services System, a position Dr. Gratton has held since 1999, and the second tour of duty on that role, with the first tour as Medical Director from 1989-1993; and

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Gratton also serves as an emergency room physician at Truman Medical Center where the experience he gained treating victims of traumatic injuries in Iraq benefit the citizens of Kansas City; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby congratulate Dr. Matthew C. Gratton for being recognized by the United States Navy for distinguishing himself through meritorious achievement, while engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLEVD that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Dr. Matthew C. Gratton and with the support of the Mayor and Council.
