RESOLUTION NO. 100042

Honoring Hallmark Cards, Inc. on its 100th anniversary.

WHEREAS, one hundred years ago, Joyce C. Hall, a teenage boy at the time, stepped off a train with a box of postcards and the ambition to start a business in Kansas City; and

WHEREAS, a century after the salesman from Nebraska put down roots, his legacy enterprise – Hallmark Cards Inc. – is one of the City’s leading corporate citizens; and

WHEREAS, as it grew, Hallmark became a best-places-to-work employer, a major real estate developer and one of the most recognized brand names in the world; and

WHEREAS, Hall’s privately held greeting card company has helped billions of people tell others that they care; and

WHEREAS, Hallmark and the Hall family have changed the downtown landscape through grants from their philanthropic foundation; and

WHEREAS, Kansas Citians can count the founding of Midwest Research Institute, the development of Children’s Mercy Hospital, and major endowments to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, the University of Kansas and the United Way as just a few of the notable Hall and Hallmark contributions; and

WHEREAS, through the years of struggle and adversity, Hallmark Cards has survived and prospered; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby honor Hallmark Cards Inc. on its 100th anniversary; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Don Hall, Jr., in token of the Mayor, Council and citizens of Kansas City’s best wishes for many more years of prosperity in Kansas City and for its many philanthropic endeavors.
