RESOLUTION NO. 120274

 

Recognizing Alan A. Young, Sr., for his 14 years of dedicated service as the Ivanhoe Neighborhood Council President.

 

WHEREAS, in 1995, Alan Young and his wife took a stand on their block at 38th and Highland and worked with Project Neighborhood, churches and other concerned partners to close six drug houses; and

 

WHEREAS, after getting rid of drugs on their block, they began working with a small number of Ivanhoe residents to improve the neighborhood; and

 

WHEREAS, in 1999, Ivanhoe participated in the City’s FOCUS process, and a year later, more than 100 people worked for six months to develop the Ivanhoe strategic plan; and

 

WHEREAS, since 2000, Ivanhoe residents and partners have worked with Mr. Young to implement the strategic plan and many accomplishments have been achieved with Alan providing leadership to the Board of Directors and serving as Chairperson of the Housing Economic Development and Jobs Committee; and

 

WHEREAS, in 2000, crime was higher in Ivanhoe than in any other neighborhood and today Ivanhoe is no longer one of the top 10 neighborhoods for the highest crime in the City and, in 2000, Ivanhoe had more vacant lots than any other neighborhood in the City and today, more than 50 new houses have been built and many houses have been rehabbed; and

 

WHEREAS, since 2003, Christmas in October repaired close to 700 homes in Ivanhoe and Nutter Ivanhoe Neighborhood Center was renovated and opened in February 2006; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby recognize Alan A. Young, Sr., for his 14 years of dedicated service as the Ivanhoe Neighborhood Council President; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Alan A. Young, Sr., with the appreciation of the Mayor and Council for his many years of dedicated service to the community.
