RESOLUTION NO. 170370

 

Recognizing students from Pembroke Middle School for their commitment to social justice and for their efforts to combat homelessness in Kansas City.

 

WHEREAS, Pembroke Hill Middle School students Cora Adkins, Abby Himmelstein, Maddie Lee, and Kirsten Jordan-Hyde chose to address the problem of homelessness in Kansas City for their Civic Action Project; and

 

WHEREAS, the goal of their project was to better understand the problem of homelessness and then determine a way to address it; and

 

WHEREAS, to better understand homelessness the students conducted interviews with the Greater Kansas City Coalition to End Homelessness and several area leaders; and

 

WHEREAS, for their action plan the students collaborated with Giving the Basics to collect the most needed items for individuals and families who are homeless; and

 

WHEREAS, the students successfully collected enough donations to fill several bins containing essential items for those who are less fortunate; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby recognize students from Pembroke Middle School for their commitment to social justice and for their efforts to combat homelessness in Kansas City; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that copies hereof be presented to Cora Adkins, Abby Himmelstein, Maddie Lee, and Kirsten Jordan-Hyde in token of recognition and appreciation by the Mayor and Council for their efforts to raise awareness for homelessness.
