COMMITTEE SUBSTITUTE FOR RESOLUTION NO. 060980, AS AMENDED

 

Directing the City Manager to explore various means of publicly financing construction of the Buck ONeil Education & Research Center.

 

WHEREAS, many of baseballs most noted stars of the past century began their careers in the Negro Leagues including Hank Aaron, Ernie Banks, Roy Campanella, Larry Doby, Willie Mays, Satchel Paige and Jackie Robinson, before showcasing their talent in the Major Leagues; and

WHEREAS, in 1920, the Negro National League, which was the first of the Negro Baseball Leagues, was formed under the guidance of Andrew Rube Foster, a former player, manager and owner of the Chicago American Giants, at a meeting held at the Paseo YMCA in Kansas City, Missouri; and

WHEREAS, the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum has officially been designated Americas National Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and the national repository of memorabilia, artifacts, exhibits and data regarding this important part of American history; and

WHEREAS, the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum is located at 1616 East 18th Street in a facility owned by the City of Kansas City, Missouri; and

WHEREAS, the expansion of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, by renovating the former YMCA building into the Buck ONeil Education & Research Center, will provide the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum with additional exhibit space, classroom space, data storage capabilities, and will modernize data retrieval capabilities and create interactive exhibits to educate the public about the Negro Leagues; and

WHEREAS, the Buck ONeil Education & Research Center will enhance the 18th & Vine Historic District, the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and will assist Kansas City in attracting conventions and tourists; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

Section 1. That the City Manager is authorized and directed to explore various means of publicly financing the construction of the Buck ONeil Education & Research Center.

Section 2. That the City Manager is authorized and directed to do whatever, in his discretion, is reasonably necessary to implement the terms and spirit of this resolution.
