RESOLUTION NO. 150379

 

Congratulating Geneva Morris on her 100th birthday.

 

WHEREAS, Geneva Morris was born May 26, 1915, in Clow, Arkansas, moving to Kansas City in 1923 after the destruction of the family home by a tornado where she graduated from Lincoln High School in 1933 as a member of the National Honor Society; and

 

WHEREAS, Geneva began a sewing career in 1934 that continued until 1948 where she designed and made clothing for well-known Kansas City business people including the families of Robert Altman, Hollywood director, and Philip Kassebaum, who was the husband of Kansas Senator Nancy Kassebaum; and

 

WHEREAS, Geneva then started a new career in 1958 with the Social Security Administration, retiring in 1979 with 20+ years of service and receiving the Commissioners Citation (the agency’s highest honor) in 1974; and

 

WHEREAS, Geneva has been a member of the “Historic” Centennial United Methodist Church since 1923 and during her tenure has been an active member of the Adult Fellowship (formerly the Epworth League), the Senior Usher Board, the Glom Chasers Club, the Gospel Choir, the Ruth Group of the United Methodist Women, the Aaron Poole Sunday School Class, the Chancel Choir, the Messiah Oratorio Committee and the Committee on Archives and History; and

 

WHEREAS, Geneva has been interviewed by both the KC Call and the KC Star chronicling Negro/Black life in Kansas City during her lifetime and she is still the Centennial Church Historian; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby congratulate Geneva Morris on her 100th birthday; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Geneva Morris with the appreciation of the Mayor, Council and citizens of Kansas City for her many years of dedicated service to this community.
