RESOLUTION NO. 100500

 

Expressing the support of the City Council for Kansas City’s continued prominence and leadership in intercollegiate athletics.

 

WHEREAS, Kansas City has a long and storied history as hub for various regional collegiate athletic conferences such as the Big 6, the Missouri Valley, the Big 8, and the Big 12; and

 

WHEREAS, the Kansas-Missouri football rivalry is the second most played rivalry in college football history, being played since 1891, and the Kansas-Kansas State rivalry has been in place since 1902; and

 

WHEREAS, Kansas City has a rich history of hosting a wide variety of regular season, post season, and national championship games in our various sports facilities; and

 

WHEREAS, the citizens of Kansas City have a long history of recognizing and supporting the value of intercollegiate athletics through their sponsorship of events and through the financial support for the development and maintenance of superior athletic facilities; and

 

WHEREAS, Kansas City is blessed with a series of outstanding athletic facilities and the necessary support and entertainment facilities needed to continue as a host for future intercollegiate athletic events; and

 

WHEREAS, Kansas City is already the home to a wide variety of organizations related to or governing various aspects of amateur and intercollegiate athletics; and

 

WHEREAS, the City Council and the citizens of Kansas City recognize the significant economic impact that these athletic events have in the community and also recognize the economic impact that the presence of these various institutions brings; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and City Council hereby state their interest and on-going support for Kansas City’s role as a home and destination for intercollegiate athletic events and organizations.
