Declaring November 20, 2012, as “Universal Children’s Day” and honoring Children International, founded in 1936, and headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri.

WHEREAS, Children International serves nearly 350,000 children in 11 countries, and the organization’s mission is to “bring real and lasting change to children living in poverty by reducing their daily struggles, investing in their potential, and providing them with the opportunity to grow up healthy, educated and prepared to succeed and contribute to society;” and

WHEREAS, on November 20, 1959, the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, and on November 20, 1989, the United Nations adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child; and

WHEREAS, on the 14th day of December 1954, the General Assembly of the United Nations recommended that all countries institute a Universal Children's Day, to be observed as a day of worldwide fraternity and understanding between children; and

WHEREAS, Children International has both Associative and Consultative status with the United Nations; and

WHEREAS, UNICEF promotes and coordinates this special day; and

WHEREAS, in 2000, world leaders outlined the Millennium Development Goals, including halving extreme poverty, halting the spread of HIV/AIDS, and providing universal primary education, by the target date of 2015. Though the Goals are for all humankind, UNICEF has noted that six of the eight goals are primarily related to children; NOW, THEREFORE,
