RESOLUTION NO. 100624

 

Honoring the Kansas City Explorers for their WTT championship.

 

WHEREAS, the World TeamTennis Pro League was co-founded by Billie Jean King in 1973 and showcases the best in professional team tennis with an innovative co-ed team format; and

 

WHEREAS, the league became World Team-Tennis in 1992 and fluctuated between four and twelve teams, including the Kansas City Explorers and featuring many of the world’s top tennis players; and

 

WHEREAS, in 2006 the Explorers unveiled a new venue at Barney Allis Plaza in downtown Kansas City and featured team members Bob and Mike Bryan, the best men’s doubles team in the world, from 2005 to 2010; and

 

WHEREAS, in June, 2010, Kansas City was chosen as the site for the WTT finals to take place in late July. General Manager Jeff Launius said “It’s a great opportunity to show off our city and venue to fans throughout the region as well as a national TV audience.  This wouldn’t have been possible without the terrific support of our fans and the City of Kansas City”; and

 

WHEREAS, on July 23, 2010, the Explorers won the Western Conference by beating the Springfield Lasers. Explorers coach Brent Haygarth said, “Really, we basically expected to make the playoffs. I’m not nearly happy with just making the playoffs. I would like to win the whole thing;” and

 

WHEREAS, on July 25, 2010, The Kansas City Explorers captured their first World Team Tennis title with a 21-18 win over the New York Sportimes at the WTT Finals presented by GEICO and the City of Kansas City. The women’s doubles team Jarmila Groth and Kveta Peschke won the final set of the match, NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby honor the Kansas City Explorers for their WTT championship; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Mel Launius, Jeff Launius, and Shelley Ford with the congratulations of the Mayor, Council and citizens of Kansas City for winning the championship.
