RESOLUTION NO. 150560

Congratulating Miss Erris Pierson on her year as National All American Miss Pre-Teen Queen and honoring her for her work in raising awareness of Pediatric Neuroblastoma.

WHEREAS, the National American Miss Pageant aims to build confidence in girls by focusing on the abilities and public speaking skills of its contestants rather than their physical attributes; and

WHEREAS, Miss Pierson, a Kansas City, Missouri native, was crowned in 2014 at the age of 13 as the National All American Miss Queen of the Pre-Teen Division, focusing her reign on using her crown to take cancer down; and

WHEREAS, Neuroblastoma is the most common cancer affecting children and infants in the U.S. and Erris has created a local Neuroblastoma Awareness Campaign called Lil’ Jonah and the Whale, named in honor of a young friend currently fighting this terrible cancer; and

WHEREAS, Erris organizes and aids in the creation of hand-tied blankets and embroidered pillow cases for children affected by Neuroblastoma, items which are familiar and comforting to them during their many stays in the hospital; and

WHEREAS, Erris organizes fundraisers not only to raise money for the materials for Lil’ Jonah and the Whale blankets and pillow cases, but also to spread awareness of Neuroblastoma around Kansas City; and

WHEREAS, Miss Pierson traveled to the Missouri State House in Jefferson City to request that a day in November be declared Neuroblastoma Awareness Day, but her request was regrettably denied; and

WHEREAS, Miss Erris Pierson is an extraordinary young lady and a phenomenal role model and her work inspires children to fight against Neuroblastoma and to keep hope in their hearts; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby congratulate Miss Erris Pierson on her year as National All American Miss Pre-Teen Queen and honor her for her work in raising awareness of Pediatric Neuroblastoma; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Miss Erris Pierson with the thanks and support of the Mayor and Council.
