RESOLUTION NO. 980440

 

Encouraging the Missouri Department of Transportation to rename Missouri Highway 152 in honor of Alexander Doniphan.

 

WHEREAS, Colonel Alexander Doniphan led an expedition of Missouri soldiers in one of the longest marches in military history (1800 miles) during the Mexican War during which he occupied three capitals and four Mexican states without a defeat; and

 

WHEREAS, Alexander Doniphan also served as a general in the Mormon War, capturing, but refusing against orders to execute Joseph Smith, whom he later defended in court thereby upholding the virtues of freedom of religion and speech; and

 

WHEREAS, Alexander Doniphan served as Missouri State Representative and was a respected civic leader; and

 

WHEREAS, Alexander Doniphan was a founder and trustee of William Jewel College in Liberty, Missouri; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby encourage the Missouri Department of Transportation to rename Missouri Highway 152 in honor of Alexander Doniphan.

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be forwarded to the Missouri Department of Transportation.
