RESOLUTION NO. 190468

Recognizing June 14, 2019, as “National Flag Day” in Kansas City, Missouri.

WHEREAS, Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States of America and also recognizes the history and tradition behind our country’s flag; and

WHEREAS, in 1777, the Second Continental Congress paused from writing the Articles of Confederation and passed a resolution stating that “the flag of the United States be 13 stripes, alternate red and white,” and that “the union be 13 stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation”; and

WHEREAS, Wisconsin teacher Bernard Cigrand first originated the idea for an annual flag day in 1885 and later led his school in the first formal observance of the holiday that same year. President Woodrow Wilson would later issue a proclamation in 1916, honoring the anniversary of the signing of the Flag Resolution of 1777. President Harry Truman would later sign an Act of Congress in 1949 designating June 14th of each year as National Flag Day; and

WHEREAS, the week of June 14th is designated as “National Flag Week” with the President issuing a proclamation urging all citizens to fly the American flag for the duration of June 9 – 15, 2019; and

WHEREAS, on June 14th, Kansas City invites citizens to bring their tired, old, tattered, and faded flags to be officially retired at a flag retirement ceremony at the Missouri Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington Square Park at 10 am; and

WHEREAS, the City of Kansas City encourages its citizens to celebrate and honor National Flag Day in Kansas City; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby recognize and observe June 14, 2019, as National Flag Day in Kansas City, Missouri; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be accepted by Retired U.S. Air Force Commander and Boy Scout Troop 376 Leader Mike Riley and The American Legion, Department of Missouri, in token of the appreciation of the Mayor and Council for many years of dedicated service and of their best wishes for all the years to come.
