RESOLUTION NO. 200361

 

Designating the month of May as Older Americans Month.

 

WHEREAS, in 1963, President John F. Kennedy established May as Senior Citizens Month, and two years later in 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson passed the Older Americans Act, formally designating May as Older Americans Month; and

 

WHEREAS, the population over 65 is expected to double between 2010 and 2030, bringing the total of older adults in the Kansas City area to nearly one half million, or nearly 1 in 5 people; and

 

WHEREAS, Shepherd’s Center of KC annually honors contributions made by older adults to every aspect of our community’s history, infrastructure, workforce, public service, community and culture in their ’70 Over 70’ event, including Former Kansas City, Missouri Councilwoman Joanne Collins, and Former Mayor Pro Tem Alvin Brooks; and

 

WHEREAS, Kansas City’s seniors contribute more to the economy than they take out as spending by older adults in the U.S. is nearly 40% higher than average spending by younger age groups; and

 

WHEREAS, nearly 17,000 seniors live alone in Kansas City, 70% of whom are female; and

 

WHEREAS, 1 in 12 seniors in Kansas City, Missouri, do not have enough food to live a healthy lifestyle, which is higher than the national average; and

 

WHEREAS, Shepherd’s Center of KC has served seniors for fifty years in Kansas City, Missouri, providing programs that empower older adults to live healthy, engaged and independent lives; and

 

WHEREAS, Shepherd’s Center of KC delivers nutritious meals and volunteer companionship to homebound seniors, provides social connections through their Senior Phone Pal program and lifelong learning programs to seniors in Kansas City, and provides Medicare Assistance, NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby designate the month of May 2020 as Kansas City Older Adults Month; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof with the Mayor and Council celebrating the countless contributions of seniors in our community.
