RESOLUTION NO. 100587

 

Congratulating Portia's Cafe for being an outstanding small business in Kansas City for 30 years.

 

WHEREAS, Portia Kilburn opened Portia’s Café 30 years ago at Independence and Benton Boulevards and moved to 3840 East Truman Road 24 years ago and has been in the cozy building with the “EATS” sign out front ever since; and

 

WHEREAS, owning a restaurant that serves home-cooked food is a family tradition for Portia starting with her grandmother, Joyce Vastbinder, owning Joyce’s at 15th Street and Holmes Road and then her mother, Adell Peeler, owning Del’s at Independence and Benton; and

 

WHEREAS, Portia started working summers and weekends at age 13 in her family’s restaurants and after graduating from Northeast High School, began working full time in the business; and

 

WHEREAS, at Portia’s Café everyone is treated like family, in fact, Portia’s two sisters, Janie Herschell and Trish Cuccia; as well as her son and daughter-in-law, Ernie and Michelle Davenport and a former sister-in-law, Lisa Hedges, are all employed at Portia’s Café; and

 

WHEREAS, Portia’s Café is a treasure in Kansas City’s Historic Northeast District, remembered by customers as a place where everyone is treated equally no matter what color or what creed, and they always welcome you and remember your name; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby congratulate Portia's Café for being an outstanding small business in Kansas City for 30 years; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Portia Kilburn, Janie Herschell, and Trish Cuccia with the best wishes of the Mayor, Council and citizens of Kansas City for the continued success of Portia’s Café.
