RESOLUTION NO. 100748

 

Honoring the Front Porch Alliance on its eleventh year of working alongside residents of the Ivanhoe neighborhood to make it a better place to live.

 

WHEREAS, the Front Porch Alliance works with residents of Ivanhoe and surrounding neighborhoods to improve the livability of their community; and

 

WHEREAS, the goal of Front Porch Alliance is to make neighborhoods a safer, happier place for all families by providing opportunities that have been out of their reach due to cost, logistics, or neglect; and

 

WHEREAS, the priorities of the Alliance and the neighborhoods were to clean up the area, educate the residents, provide economic development, and improving the health of the community; and

 

WHEREAS, some of the programs include life skills classes, financial literacy training, minor home repair, gardening partnerships, parenting classes, transportation to shopping, a computer lab with training, the creation of pocket parks from empty lots, family support projects, and health and fitness programs; and

 

WHEREAS, the youth initiatives of the Front Porch Alliance include a six-week summer entrepreneurial program where young people learn fiscal responsibility, good work ethics, and how to start a business; Teen Talk, a weekly session where youth come together to discuss various issues; Teens First, a weekly gathering where young people do community service projects; boys and girls mentoring groups; PAL (Partners Active in Learning), where 65 tutors work with two children each week; as well as a number of projects at school to encourage parents to participate in their children’s education; and

 

WHEREAS, the Front Porch Alliance is hopeful that one day the residents in the neighborhoods can take back their front porches so they may once again be used for the purpose they were built, to be a safe gathering place for children, families, and neighbors, and where hopes can be shared and dreams can be dreamed; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby honor the Front Porch Alliance on its eleventh year of working alongside residents of the Ivanhoe neighborhood to make it a better place to live; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Patsy Shawver, Executive Director, and Lynn Flaherty, Development Director, with the appreciation of the Mayor, Council and citizens of Kansas City for their efforts to make Kansas City neighborhoods safe for generations to come.
