RESOLUTION NO. 120869

 

Declaring the month of October 2012 to be Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Kansas City, Missouri; declaring Thursday, October 25, 2012, as National Lee Denim Day for City of Kansas City employees; and recognizing the City Council’s Sixth Annual Benefit for The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

WHEREAS, in her lifetime, 1 out of 8 women will develop breast cancer; and

WHEREAS, breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women today; and

WHEREAS, breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer of death in women ages 15-54; and

WHEREAS, although the prevalence of breast cancer in men is significantly lower than in women, men also need to become educated about breast cancer and its warning signs; and

WHEREAS, all women should be educated about early screening and detection; and

WHEREAS, because breast cancer is not one disease, but many, support for increased funding for genetic research and treatment is critically needed; and

WHEREAS, Breast Cancer Awareness Month increases the public’s awareness about breast cancer and the importance of screening and early detection and the need for funding for research and better treatments; and

WHEREAS, October 25, 2011, is declared Lee National Denim Day, a day for the community and businesses to raise awareness of breast cancer by wearing jeans to work and making a donation for breast cancer research and activities; and

WHEREAS, on October 23rd the City Council will sponsor its Sixth Annual Benefit for The Breast Cancer Research Foundation; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare the month of October 2012 to be "Breast Cancer Awareness Month" in Kansas City, Missouri and declaring October 25, 2010, as "Lee National Denim Day;" and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Tonia Titus and Jennifer Johnson, Young Survivors Coalition, with the Mayor and Council encouraging all citizens of Kansas City to participate in Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
