RESOLUTION NO. 100904

Supporting the Mini-Retreat & Stand-Down outreach event for all women who have served or are serving in the armed forces.

WHEREAS, on October 23, 2010, from 8 to 3 p.m., at the Penn Valley Campus of Metropolitan Community College, the U.S. Department of Labor Women’s Bureau in Kansas City in collaboration with other federal, state and community based organizations will honor women who served or are serving in the armed forces by addressing their needs at a Mini-Retreat & Stand-Down; and

WHEREAS, this is a first ever event in our region geared toward women veterans, and all women who have served in any branch of the military, with the goal being that every woman knows what benefits and resources are available to her; and

WHEREAS, there are over 36,000 women veterans in Missouri, but 30-40% do not take advantage of benefits that they have earned; and

WHEREAS, the Mini-Retreat & Stand-Down event will provide breakfast, lunch and free child care so that the women will be able to move freely to take advantage of information from various organizations about benefits and services, free legal advice, free health screenings, free job resources and a free clothing boutique; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby support the Mini-Retreat & Stand-Down event and honor the U.S. Department of Labor Women’s Bureau in Kansas City and their partnering organizations for their leadership in meeting the needs of all women service members and women who have served in the armed forces; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Dorothy Witherspoon, PhD, Region VII Administrator for the U.S. Department of Labor Women’s Bureau, with the appreciation of the Mayor and Council for the services being provided to our women veterans.
