RESOLUTION NO. 120837

Declaring October 15, 2012, as National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day.

WHEREAS, each year, approximately one million pregnancies in the United States end in miscarriage, stillbirth or the death of a newborn baby; and

WHEREAS, even the shortest of lives are still valuable, and the grief of those who mourn the loss of these lives should not be trivialized; and

WHEREAS, the legislatures of all 50 states have passed concurrent resolutions recognizing October 15th of each year as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day; and

WHEREAS, the observance of Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day may provide validation to those who have suffered a loss through miscarriage, stillbirth, or other complications; and

WHEREAS, recognizing Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day would enable the people to consider how, as individuals and communities, they can meet the needs of bereaved mothers, fathers, and family members, and work to prevent the causes of these deaths; and

WHEREAS, in order to reduce the risk and prevent future deaths, we must acknowledge, remember and honor those precious little lives that ended too soon; and

WHEREAS, 1st Breath is committed to providing education, advocacy, and public awareness, in addition to assisting families and medical professionals dealing with the death of a baby; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare October 15, 2012, as National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Pat Flynn, PhD, 1st Breath, with the appreciation of the Mayor, Council and citizens of Kansas City for their commitment to preventing the loss of all infants.
