Designating September 15 October 15, 2004, Hispanic Heritage Month.


WHEREAS, National Hispanic Heritage Month will be celebrated from September 15 through October 15; and


WHEREAS, the Greater Kansas City National Hispanic Heritage Committee will present its 21st annual Fiesta Hispana on Saturday, September 11 and Sunday, September 12 in downtown Kansas City, Missouri, with support from the Neighborhood Tourist Development Program, to increase understanding, communication, and respect between communities while fostering pride in Hispanic/Latino youths by reaffirming the role of Hispanics in the development of our nation, its history, traditions and values; and


WHEREAS, Fiesta Hispana 2004 will recognize the late Jose Gonzalez, father and co-founder with Becky Jaramillo and Ninfa Garza of Fiesta Hispana and the GKC Hispanic Heritage Committee of Greater Kansas City board of directors chairman/president Joe G. Jaramillo, vice chairwoman/vice president Maria T. Chaurand, secretary Bea Rodriguez, and treasurer Mike Morado for promoting the cultural, educational and economic advancement of the Hispanic community, and

WHEREAS, Hispanics have significantly contributed in all aspects of the development of the United States of America and played an important role in the early exploration and settlement of our nation; and


WHEREAS, Kansas City elected officials recognize and support the celebration of Hispanic/Latino cultures and traditions and reaffirms our commitment to eliminate all residues of prejudice and be more receptive to the richness of diverse cultures; and


WHEREAS, our City must continue to search out innovative ways in which government and community can work in partnership to ensure that all Americans benefit from resulting improvements; and


WHEREAS, Fiesta Hispana has created such partnerships with the City, Guadalupe Centers, Inc., LULAC, Mattie Rhodes Counseling and Art Centers, National Education Center, AFL-CIO Labor Council for Latin American Advancement; NOW, THEREFORE,




That the Mayor and Council do hereby designate September 15 October 15, 2004, as Hispanic Heritage Month in Kansas City, Missouri; congratulate the Hispanic Heritage Committee on its 21st annual Fiesta Hispana; and, urge all citizens to reflect on the Hispanic heritage of our nation and share in the rich diversity, prosperity and abundance of our great country; and


BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that copies be presented in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month.
