RESOLUTION NO. 120856

Designating the week of October 7-13, 2012, as Fire Prevention Week.

WHEREAS, Fire Prevention Week is held yearly to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire of October 8 and 9 of 1871 that killed more than 250 people, left approximately 100,000 people homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres; and

WHEREAS, during this week the entire nation takes time to recognize the skill and dedication of our nation’s fire service and its attempts to prevent fires and save lives and property, and the Kansas City Fire Department educates the people of this City about the assistance they can render in the prevention of fires and what to do if a fire occurs; and

WHEREAS, this year’s Fire Prevention Week theme is “Have Two Ways Out” stressing the need to make and practice a home fire escape plan that includes knowing two ways out of every room and agreeing on an outside meeting place a safe distance from the home; and

WHEREAS, the personnel of the Kansas City Fire Department work to prevent fires and risk their lives to protect the lives and property of all our citizens; and

WHEREAS, it is the duty and responsibility of all our citizens to use caution and care in the maintenance of property, and to maintain a working smoke detector to prevent loss of life, suffering and destruction of irreplaceable property; and

WHEREAS, virtually all fires can be prevented by careful planning and implementation of safety procedures; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council of Kansas City declare the week of October 7-13, 2012, as Fire Prevention Week in Kansas City; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Mayor and Council urge all citizens of this community to remove conditions on their property that create dangerous fire hazards, to install and regularly change the batteries in their smoke detectors, and practice home fire drills to help the Fire Department make our City a safer place in which to live and work; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that copies hereof be presented to  Interim Chief Paul Berardi of the Kansas City, Missouri Fire Department; Mike Cambiano, President of Local 42 of the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF); and Clay Calvin, President of Local 3808 of the IAFF.
