RESOLUTION NO. 100934
Expressing
appreciation and thanks to City staff for its response to the violent storm of
September 18.
WHEREAS, a violent
wind and rain storm of September 18, 2010, wreaked havoc on portions of Kansas
City’s Northland bounded generally by N.E. 56th Street on the north, Parvin
Road on the south, Antioch Road on the west, and I-435 on the east, uprooting
trees, damaging homes, sparking prolonged power outages, blocking streets, and
bringing distress and chaos to a peaceful fall weekend; and
WHEREAS, despite the
storm’s occurrence at 10:45 p.m. on Saturday night, Parks and Recreation and
Public Works crews cleared major streets for travel by midnight, and all
streets in the area were open for traffic by the end of the day on Sunday; and
WHEREAS, as the massive cleanup
unfolded in the wake of the storm, valiant crews from the Parks and Recreation
and Public Works Departments were joined by Water Services crews as well as
Parks and Recreation contractor Asplundh Tree Expert Company, all working in a
coordinated, mission-driven manner to quickly relieve the misery of the many
residents impacted by the powerful storm; and
WHEREAS, the response was all the more extraordinary against the
backdrop of budget reductions experienced by the several departments over the
last three years, revealing once more the dedication and resourcefulness of
Kansas City’s stalwart work crews and professional managers; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE COUNCIL OF
KANSAS CITY:
That the Mayor and Council hereby
express appreciation and thanks to City staff for its response to the violent
storm of September 18; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of
the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Mark McHenry, Forest Decker, Stan Harris and Greg Rokos with
the profound appreciation and gratitude of the Mayor, Council and citizens of
Kansas City for the Parks and Recreation, Public Works and Water Services
Departments for their timely and well-executed response to the destructive
storm of September 18, 2010.
