RESOLUTION NO. 120110

Supporting the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority in its pursuit of compressed natural gas as a viable option for fueling the KCATA vehicle fleet.

WHEREAS, the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (KCATA) is interested in the environmental and economic advantages that can be achieved through using domestic “clean fuels,” such as compressed natural gas (CNG); and

WHEREAS, the KCATA recognizes that the use of domestic fuels for transportation can potentially insulate the organization from dramatic oil price fluctuations, while potentially supporting national security; and

WHEREAS, the KCATA considers alternative fuels a key component to ensuring sustainability for the organization; and

WHEREAS, the KCATA recognizes that transit agencies across the country are fueling their fleets with CNG while experiencing environmental and economical benefits; and

WHEREAS, the City of Kansas City successfully implemented a CNG program in 1997 which now displaces nearly 500,000 gallons of petroleum fuel annually, while consistently saving on fuel costs with City vehicles and airport buses; and

WHEREAS, the City continues to grow the CNG program through upgrades to the airport CNG station and by contracting with a third-party to upgrade and maintain the CNG stations; and

WHEREAS, the KCATA is supportive of Resolution No. 080091, which implements a strategy for making Kansas City “America’s Green Region”; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANAS CITY:

That the City of Kansas City supports the KCATA in its pursuit of compressed natural gas as a viable option for fueling the KCATA vehicle fleet.
