RESOLUTION NO. 050487

 

Designating the 30th day of April of 2005 as Da de los Nios': Celebrating Young Americans.

 

WHEREAS, children represent the hopes and dreams of the citizens of the United States and should be nurtured and invested in to preserve and enhance economic prosperity, democracy, and the American spirit; and

 

WHEREAS, the Mattie Rhodes Center has served as a voice for children since 1894 and whose mission is to strengthen Kansas City children, families and community by providing professional social services, mental health counseling and art experiences in a bilingual, culturally sensitive environment has worked with the City of Kansas City, Missouri to declare April 30 as Da de los Nios': Celebrating Young Americans -- a day to bring together Latinos and other communities nationwide to celebrate and uplift children; and

 

             WHEREAS, Mattie Rhodes Centers philosophy of treatment of children states we all have a responsibility to help children learn to be self-directed and in control of their behavior.  We should encourage children to learn how to solve problems and settle differences in a positive, appropriate manner among themselves; and

 

            WHEREAS, Mattie Rhodes Center recommends all children be treated with respect and dignity.  Shaming and humiliating is not acceptable.  Corporal punishment of any kind is strictly forbidden; and

 

WHEREAS, Mattie Rhodes Center advocates all citizens find ways to recognize the importance of all children by participating in activities that are relevant to the childrens needs, interests, values and capabilities, encourage emotional expression, encourage problem solving and conflict resolution concepts.

 

WHEREAS, the children of a nation are the responsibility of all its citizens, and citizens should be encouraged to celebrate the gifts of children to society--their curiosity, laughter, faith, energy, spirit, hopes, and dreams; and

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby designate April 30, 2005, as Da de los Nios': Celebrating Young Americans; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Mattie Rhodes Center with the Mayor and Council calling on the people of Kansas City, Missouri to join with all children, families, organizations, communities, churches, cities, and states across the nation to observe the day with appropriate ceremonies.
