RESOLUTION NO. 120391

Endorsing and supporting the Health Commission’s Kansas City Community Health Improvement Plan (“KC-CHIP).

WHEREAS, under the auspices of the Kansas City, Missouri Health Commission, nearly 100 organizations worked over a period of six months to identify the principal health problems in Kansas City, Missouri, to delineate strategies to address those issues and to create a vision of Kansas City as: “Thriving people living, learning and working in a healthy, active, vibrant and safe community where there is equitable access to jobs, quality health care, education and social services” was formulated and adopted; and

WHEREAS, to achieve this vision and improve health where we live, learn, work and play, the KC-CHIP targets six strategic issues:

·         Ensuring access to clinical preventive services, illness care, and public health services and interventions

·         Health equity and social determinants of health

·         Ensuring a safe and healthy community environment

·         Ensuring every child has a healthy start

·         Encouraging active living and healthy eating

·         Tobacco free living; and

WHEREAS, the KC-CHIP recognizes that key factors impacting the health of Kansas City residents and their neighborhoods are what are known as “social determinants of health” such as payday loans, food deserts, and violence; and

WHEREAS, it is recognized that KC-CHIP is a community-wide and community-driven strategic plan to improve health in Kansas City and can best be implemented through a concerted and coordinated effort of all applicable organizations, neighborhoods and people to fulfill their aspirations for a healthy Kansas City; and

WHEREAS, the City Council has demonstrated its desire to improve the health of all residents and believes the KC-CHIP will help further this goal; and

WHEREAS, the Health Commission, in partnership with the Health Department, will be responsible for assuring the community collaborative implementation of the KC-CHIP to the fullest extent accomplishable; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council endorse and support the Health Commission’s Community Health Improvement Plan.
