RESOLUTION NO. 080400

Declaring April 18, 2008, as Wear Blue to Promote Child Abuse Awareness in Kansas City Day.

WHEREAS, on Friday, April 18, 2008, the 1st Annual Child Abuse Prevention Month Wear Blue Day is asking that all Kansas Citians wear blue as a statement across the community that child abuse prevention is a shared responsibility and unacceptable in our society; and

WHEREAS, creating solutions for child abuse depends on the commitment and resolve of all Americans, particularly those in positions to effect change; and

WHEREAS, although the specifics of accounts of child abuse and neglect are startling, people often seem to exchange outrage for passivity, accepting such violence as that which is to be taken for granted. Because it is unconscionable to accept abuse and simply punish those who commit crimes against children, we must work to end child abuse and neglect; and

WHEREAS, effective child abuse programs succeed because of partnerships among social service agencies, school administrators and faculty, law enforcement agencies, civic and religious groups, parents, guardians, and all who care about young people; and

WHEREAS, all of us have a responsibility to become aware of child abuse and neglect and their causes and consequences and to join in prevention programs designed to educate and support parents, guardians, teachers, judges and everyone else who play a role in the lives of our young people; and

WHEREAS, we all should strive to see that children, our own and all others, are raised in loving, nurturing and safe environments; and

WHEREAS, when children are victims, we should strive to attend to their needs and help repair their lives; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby declare April 18, 2008, as Wear Blue to Promote Child Abuse Awareness in Kansas City Day.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Charlotte Williams-Rice, the Children's Division, Sandra Berger, The Children's Place, Heather Solis, The Children's Place, Gina Staves - Avila University, and Dianna Andrews, Domestic Violence Division of the City of Kansas City, Missouri, with the Mayor and Council urging all Kansas Citians to wear blue on April 18.
