RESOLUTION NO. 180854

 

Recognizing the National WWI Museum and Memorial for its activities in recognizing the importance of the centennial of the World War I Armistice on November 11, 2018.

WHEREAS, on 11 November, 1918, at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, an Armistice was signed to end fighting on the Western Front of World War I; and

 

WHEREAS, World War I was the first global conflict in human history with more than 65 million participants from every inhabited continent; and

 

WHEREAS, World War I stands as the defining event of the 20th century and beyond and continues to affect the world to this day; and

 

WHEREAS, the National WWI Museum and Memorial is America’s congressionally designated World War I museum and memorial and is located in Kansas City; and

 

WHEREAS, the United States World War I Centennial Commission was created by an Act of Congress in 2013, led by the efforts of U.S. Representative Emanuel Cleaver, II, with the assistance of other Congressional leaders, and includes two members from our community, Dr. Matthew Naylor, representing the National WWI Museum and Memorial, and Debra Anderson, representing the Veterans of Foreign Wars; and

 

WHEREAS, earlier this year the  U.S. World War I Centennial Commission called upon all Americans across the nation to toll bells in remembrance of those who served in World War I on Armistice Day, November 11, 2018, and created programming, educational content, and a free bell tolling app that can be downloaded at ww1cc.org/bells; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council do hereby recognize November 11, 2018, as “Bells of Peace Day”, urging all citizens and institutions throughout Kansas City, including municipal facilities, houses of worship, and other willing partners, to pause, participate, and listen for the tolling of bells at 11:00 a.m., Sunday, November 11, 2018m in remembrance of the Armistice; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Dr. Matthew Naylor, President and CEO of the National WWI Museum and Memorial, with the Mayor and Council commending the National WWI Museum and Memorial for its activities to commemorate the centennial of the Armistice of World War I and pay tribute to those who served.
