RESOLUTION NO. 010815

 

Honoring Beth Smith for her outstanding work and community service to Kansas City.

 

WHEREAS, Beth Smith moved to Kansas City in 1948 when her husband, Ed Smith, began practicing law here; and

 

WHEREAS, Beth once met Eleanor Roosevelt as the editor of the Central High School newspaper where Mrs. Roosevelt addressed the group of students beginning with We journalists which made Beth realize the humility and kindness of a woman who became one of her role models for community service and leadership; and

 

WHEREAS, in the 1950's Beth took a public role herself with her spot on one of the Citys first interracial speaking groups, the Panel of American Women and later was named Chairperson of the Kansas City Human Relations Commission; and

 

WHEREAS, Beth was one of the founders of the Womens Employment Network, the Center for Nonprofit Management Assistance, the Central Exchange, the Womens Foundation of Greater Kansas City, the Wildwood Outdoor Education Center and the National Alliance for Nonviolent Programming; and

 

WHEREAS, currently Beth is an Adjunct Professor of Nonprofit Leadership and Management and a Senior Fellow in the Bloch School at UMKC and teaches nonprofit governance, board staff relations, citizen participation and the power and implementation of inclusiveness in nonprofits; and

 

WHEREAS, Beth is active on the Kansas City Neighborhood Alliance, the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum Institute, the Womens Employment Network and the Jewish Heritage Foundation boards and the Eighteenth and Vine Cultural Museums Commission; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby honor Beth Smith for her outstanding work and community service to Kansas City; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Beth Smith with the congratulations of the Mayor, Council and citizens of Kansas City for her remarkable career as a community service activist.
