RESOLUTION NO. 070083
Commending
the American Jazz Museum on the Tenth Anniversary of its opening, and affirming
the Councils intent to support events surrounding the celebration in 2007.
WHEREAS,
the American Jazz Museum opened September 6, 1997, as this countrys only museum dedicated to jazz; and
WHEREAS, the
mission of the American Jazz Museum is to celebrate and exhibit the experience
of jazz as an original American art form through research, exhibition,
education and performance at one of the countrys jazz crossroads18th and
Vine; and
WHEREAS,
the American Jazz Museum is now an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution and
a successful tourism destination in the Citys 18th and Vine
Historic District, located at 1616 East 18th Street; and
WHEREAS,
the American Jazz Museum will celebrate the tenth anniversary of its opening in
September of 2007, and will commemorate the occasion with a City-wide
celebration of jazz and culture;
WHEREAS,
the Council deems support of this event to be a worthy expenditure of City
funds, to be expressed as a challenge grant to the American Jazz Museum in the
amount of $50,000.00; NOW, THEREFORE,
BE IT
RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:
Section
1. That the Mayor and Council hereby recognize and commemorate the tenth
anniversary of the American Jazz Museum.
Section 2. That
the Council hereby affirms its intent to provide $50,000.00 in funding as a
challenge grant in support of the 10th anniversary events.
Section 3. That
the City Manager is authorized and directed to do whatever, in his discretion,
is reasonably necessary to implement the terms and spirit of this resolution.
