Saluting An Wei, president of the Sino-American Society in Xian, China.


WHEREAS, An Wei is a professor at the Xian United University and president of the Edgar and Helen Snow Studies Center and president of the Sino-American Society of Xian, China, one of Kansas Citys Sister Cities; and


WHEREAS, Professor An Wei was born into a family of farmers in Shaanxi province, China, in 1942. He always helped his parents on their farm, but also found time to attend school. In college, An Wei majored in English language with an emphasis on British literature. He also studied Chinese literature, philosophy, and the liberal arts at Xian Foreign Languages University. Later, in 1966, he was chosen to attend graduate school in London, but the Cultural Revolution took place and prevented him from continuing his studies in England. Although talented as an interpreter, An Wei was sent to a re-education camp and forced to do hard labor until his release in 1974. At that time, he translated for Vice-President Walter Mondale, President Jimmy Carter, Henry Kissinger, Englands Prime Minister Edward Heath, Arthur Miller, Harrison Salisbury, Helen Foster Snow and many other prominent people; and


WHEREAS, Professor Wei has been instrumental in forging ties between the United States and China, and has worked with several American cities in their efforts to develop sister city relationships. He is widely traveled, and is a scholar of Chinese-American relations. He is a prolific author, and has won many awards for his writing, including the First Prize of Literary Translation(1987), Second Prize of Childrens Literature(1989), Special Prize in Liberal Arts(1989) and First Prize for the Study of Foreign Literature(1990). He is a specialist on the works of the renowned Edgar and Helen Snow; and


WHEREAS, Professor An Wei has been a good friend to the Chinese-American community in Kansas City and has helped the Kansas City-Xian Sister City Committee with such projects as the James J. Lloyd Library and Learning Center in Xian and in assisting Chinese artists exhibiting their work at the Plaza Art Fair; NOW, THEREFORE,




That the Mayor and Council hereby salute An Wei, president of the Sino-American Society in Xian, China; and


BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to An Wei in appreciation by the Mayor and Council for his friendship with the Kansas City Xian Sister City Committee.
