RESOLUTION NO. 120573

 

Declaring the week of June 25, 2012, as Cell Phone Free Driving Week.

 

WHEREAS, approximately 25% of vehicular accidents involve cell phone use while driving (according to the National Safety Council); and

 

WHEREAS, the risk of being involved in a vehicular accident is 4 times greater when a driver uses a cell phone while driving and up to 23 times greater if the driver is texting while driving; and

 

WHEREAS, approximately 11% of drivers at any one time are using a cell phone while driving; and

 

WHEREAS, all Kansas City residents are urged to educate themselves about the risks associated with using a cell phone while driving; and

 

WHEREAS, pledging to drive cell phone free increases the safety of all who travel on the roadways throughout Kansas City; and

WHEREAS, all Kansas City residents are encouraged to see the value in protecting lives by taking the pledge to drive cell phone free; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council do hereby declare the week of June 25, 2012, as Cell Phone Free Driving Week; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Eric Hallerud, Corporate Safety and Risk Manager, Kristin Danner, Assistant Corporate Safety Manager, Dan Minor, Safety and Security Manager, Water Services Department, and Veronica Watson-Perkins, Safety Manager, Aviation Department with the Mayor and Council urging all citizens to learn about the risks associated with using a cell phone while driving and to take the pledge to drive cell free.
