RESOLUTION NO. 150356

Honoring the Foster Grandparent Program of Jackson, Clay and Platte Counties of Missouri.

  WHEREAS, older Americans bring a lifetime of skills and experience as parents, workers, and citizens that can be tapped to meet challenges in our communities; and

WHEREAS, the Foster Grandparent Program began on August 28, 1965, as a national demonstration effort of low-income persons, aged 60 or over, who have the maturity and experience to establish personal relationships with children having either exceptional or special needs; and

WHEREAS, the Foster Grandparent Program came to the Kansas City metropolitan area in 1976 and has been active in the Kansas City area for 39 years; and

 

 WHEREAS service by older Americans helps volunteers by keeping them active, healthy, and engaged, helps our communities by solving local problems, and helps our nation by saving taxpayer dollars, reducing healthcare costs, and strengthening our democracy; and

WHEREAS annually over 110 KC Foster Grandparent volunteers aged 55 and over assist in schools, daycare centers and hospitals and essential to their core service responsibilities is to support the improvement of literacy skills among youth,

WHEREAS the fourth annual Senior Corps Week, taking place May 18-22, 2015, and the recognition in 2015 of the 50th anniversary of the Foster Grandparent program is an opportunity to thank Foster Grandparent volunteers for their service and recognize their positive impact and value to our community; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

That the Mayor and Council hereby express their appreciation to the KC Foster Grandparent Program Jackson, Clay and Platte counties for their 39 years of dedicated service to the children of this community; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to the Foster Grandparent volunteers, staff of Corporation for National and Community Service Regional Office and staff of Reconciliation Services, in token of the appreciation of the Mayor and Council and in celebration of Senior Corps Week and 39 years of dedicated service to the children in our community.
