RESOLUTION NO. 010483

 

Condemning the recent expressing of hatred and bigotry toward African-American churches and businesses in Kansas City and endorsing the submission of letters of support to recipients of this hate mail.

 

WHEREAS, a number of African-American churches and businesses in Kansas City have recently received anonymous, racist, hate-filled letters; and

 

WHEREAS, the City of Kansas City, Missouri, is a community dedicated to racial, ethnic and religious diversity, fairness and inclusiveness in its government institutions, businesses, neighborhoods and religious institutions; and

 

WHEREAS, Clergy and Church Against Race Violence is coordinating a community-wide response to the racist hate mail by collection Messages of Support for the affected churches and businesses, and is planning to present these messages at a public Show of Support on Saturday, March 31, 2001, at three in the afternoon in front of the J.C. Nichols Fountain on the Country Club Plaza; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council do censure and condemn the recent incidents of hatred and bigotry as being unworthy of the values and ideals of our community and that the City and its many residents envision, work toward and embrace a future free of hatred and behaviors associated with hatred; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to the Clergy and Church Against Race Violence with the encouragement and support of the Mayor and Council for their dedication to end racism and hatred in our community.
