RESOLUTION NO. 080743

 

Honoring Elizabeth Rice on the occasion of her ninetieth birthday and declaring July 24, 2008, as Elizabeth Rice Day in Kansas City.

 

WHEREAS, Elizabeth Rice, who traces the roots of her citizenship to rural America in the World War I era, migrated to Kansas City in 1939, and is celebrating her ninetieth birthday this month; and

 

WHEREAS, her citizenship has been tempered by two world wars, the Great Depression, conflicts in Korea, Vietnam, and the Persian Gulf, a marriage of sixty-two years, and the care and upbringing of five children, twelve grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren; and

 

WHEREAS, throughout her long life, Elizabeth Rice has extended her strong work ethic, pervasive wisdom and enduring love to family, friends and community, to this very day remaining active in her beloved east side Kansas City community, where over the years, she has tirelessly devoted herself to St. Michaels and Our Lady of Peace Churches, Minute Circle Community Center, Nowlin Hall, the East 23rd Street PAC, and the Blue Valley Neighborhood Association, and never fails to exercise the precious privilege and responsibility of voting in local, state and national elections; and

 

WHEREAS, her lifetime of quiet, unpretentious and selfless efforts in the cause for family, friends, and community wholeheartedly deserve official recognition and thanks; and

 

WHEREAS, Elizabeth Rice, through her indestructible integrity, enduring energy, keen wit, and plainspoken common sense, has distinguished and endeared herself to all who know her, thereby enriching the lives of all Kansas Citans; NOW, THEREFORE,

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF KANSAS CITY:

 

That the Mayor and Council hereby honor Elizabeth Rice on the occasion of her ninetieth birthday and declare July 24, 2008, as Elizabeth Rice Day in Kansas City; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution be spread upon the Minutes of the Council in testimony thereof and that a copy hereof be presented to Elizabeth Rice with the congratulations of the Mayor, Council and citizens of Kansas City for her many years of service to the community.
